Biographical Note: Sheppard arrived in California by 1880 and was employed in various occupations in various cities throughout the state.  In 1888 he was listed as a photographer in Petaluma and he produced many fine cabinet card portraits during his stay.

The photo has a special trompe l'oeil effect, which makes the photo look like a scroll. The photographer, Lafayette Sheppard, was only in Petaluma for one year in 1888.
