Biographical Note: Unlike the other 19th century Petaluma photographers, Ross lived in Petaluma for many years. Arriving in Petaluma in 1855 at age 23, he began his profession as a photographer in 1862, moving his studio within the city several times as noted on his various cdv imprints. In 1868 he was also part of a photographic studio partnership, Ross and Ormsby, on Main Street in Petaluma. Ross died in Petaluma and was buried in Cypress Hill Memorial Park in Petaluma. Very little is known of Ormsby.

Description: Carte de visite of Nancy Jane (Jennie) Whitney's bust. Whitney's hair is braided and pulled back. She is wearing a dark dress with a pin at the base of her neck. Just a small amount of her white collar is visible. The square cut corners, the card's border, and Ross & Ormsby's duration in Petaluma date the photo to 1868, when Nancy Jane was a teenager.
Biographical Note: Nancy Jane (Jennie) Whitney was born 1855 to Senator Albion P. Whitney and Susan Eastman. Her siblings include; Calvin E., Cleora, Arthur L., Leona, Marcella, Albion, and Clara.
