THE SITTER:
Name: Lizzie Mitchel (also spelled Mitchell)
Description: Lizzie Mitchel directly faces the camera in a frontal, head-and-shoulders pose. Her expression is neutral, but her gaze intense. She wears a black lace blouse with large puffs at the shoulder seams, a style fashionable in the 1890s. Her high collar is pinned just below her neck with a gold bar brooch. At the top of her head is a mound of short, dark, curls. The hair at the sides of her face lies flat and has presumably been combed to form a bun at the back of her head.
Biographical Note: The names “Lizzie Mitchel” and “Lizzie Mitchell” were included in lists of social event attendees in the Petaluma newspapers several times between 1892 and 1912. The Petaluma Argus-Courier announced on November 2, 1905 Miss Lizzie Mitchell’s pending marriage in San Francisco to an unnamed groom, but on May 21, 1912 stated that, “Misses Margaret and Lizzie Mitchell, formerly of this city, are here from San Francisco.”
Family Affiliation: The Petaluma Argus Courier announcement of November 2, 1905, states that Miss Lizzie Mitchell was the daughter of J. Mitchell, “the well known tailor” and sister of Jimmy and Mary Mitchell.

Description, front: This is a formal, frontal, head-and-shoulders portrait of a young woman. The photographer’s imprint appears along the bottom.
Description, back: Handwritten in pencil in cursive along the top edge is, “Lizzie Mitchel”.
Date: 1891-1895
Condition: With the exception of slight soiling in the corners, this cabinet card is in good condition.
