PHOTOGRAPHER / PHOTOGRAPHIC STUDIO:

JOSLIN & COMPANY was established by the photographer Amon James Tuft Joslin. He was born in 1839 in Rockwood, New York, and died in 1913 in San Benito County, California. He established the Petaluma Photo Parlor under the name of Joslin & Company in November 1893, and left the studio, departing for Chico, California in April 1897. THE SITTER:

Name: Unidentified

Description: This smiling, round-faced baby sits calmly with both arms resting on either side of its body. It wears a white gown with large puffs sleeves, and a white lace bib. It appears the baby’s blanket, which is decorated with an animal print, has been draped over the arm of the chair.

Medium: gelatin or collodion photographic print mounted on cardstock

Description, front: This portrait has been mounted on a cream-colored card which has scalloped edges. The Joslin & Company imprint appears on the bottom edge in blue ink.

Description, back: The back of this card is either empty or contains only an accession number.

Date: November 1893 - April 1897

Condition: This cabinet card is slightly soiled throughout, and a stain appears on the baby’s right cheek.
