Photographer: Lafayette Sheppard (b. 1852 Ohio, d. 1940 Inglewood, California)

Active in Petaluma: 1888

Biographical Note: Sheppard arrived in California by 1880 and was employed in various occupations in various cities throughout the state.  In 1888 he was listed as a photographer in Petaluma and he produced many fine cabinet card portraits during his stay.

Description: Cabinet card of an unidentified man's bust of the Clarke family. The man's hair is parted and slicked. He has a waxed handlebar mustache. Visible in the frame is his collar; tie with pin, and collar of his jacket. The photo has a trompe l'oeil effect. The photographer, Lafayette Sheppard, was only in Petaluma for one year in 1888.

Photographer: George Ross (b. Feb. 2, 1832 Edinburgh Scotland; d. ******, 1893 Petaluma, CA) 

Active in Petaluma: 1862-1893

Biographical Note: Unlike the other 19th century Petaluma photographers, Ross lived in Petaluma for many years.  Arriving in Petaluma in 1855 at age 23, he began his profession as a photographer in 1862, moving his studio within the city several times as noted on his various cdv imprints.  For a short time he was also part of a photographic studio partnership, Ross and Ormsby, on Main Street in Petaluma.  Ross died in Petaluma and was buried ******

Description: Pastel pink cabinet card of an unidentified woman belonging to the Clarke family. The woman's hair is parted down the middle, intricately braided and pulled back. She is wearing a dark corseted dress with pleating around the cuffs, a white lace collar, and a white lace flower at the base of her neck. She is sitting in a fringed studio chair. The women's hair/fashion, the fringed chair, and the color of the card date the photo to the 1870's.
